Crystal Castles Video research

I wanted to get my video similar to other crystal castles videos so i looked at their other videos and fan made videos to get a better idea of what i wanted to make.

An obvious thing to include in my video is light, and lots of it. strobe lights, flashing lights, colourful lights. Colour as well, bright colours, like neon, glow in the dark stuff. Dark/black backgrounds.

Massive Attack - Angel

Massive attack's video for angel is clips from a film from the film "Vampyr" from 1932. The video is clearly based on the film so it is also based on death and vampires.
The first time i watched this video i wasnt sure what was happening, well to be honest im still not sure but i think, that the man in the coffin is a vampire and they are burrying him to get rid of him and it is from his perspective and like a fly on the wall perspective. When looking from his point of view you are seeing what he can see out of the coffin, like watching the sky and the trees go by. At the end of the video you see a grave being opend and a man hammering a long metal pole into the body in the coffin, however i do not think the body in that coffin is the "vampire".

The song is steady and relaxing, i think this goes well with the video because it is almost like the music is playing inside the "vampire"s head, he is waiting to be burried. This links to my story board for stretched on your grave because that is also about death and graves. I could possibly do somthing like they have, the point of view from the burried persons grave.

Marilyn manson - The beautiful people

The Video for marilyn mansons the beautiful people is, i think, i ironic because all the people you can see are not exactly beautiful. The costumes and the make-up have been done to make them look odd, to make them not look human. There are alot of wierd costumes in this video and alot of wierd props.
There are alot of flashing images in this video, especially at the beginning, the first 30 seconds of it is just flashing images of strange things.
The images in this video are shocking, because they're a bit disturbing and gurungy, it doesn't show things you see every day, is more like something from a nightmare or a horror film. That kind of idea links in with my idea for "stretched on your grave", the title is a bit shocking and i was to incorporate that into my storyboard.
I think visually the video is attention grabbing, because it is just in you face strange, you don't want to look but you have to sort of thing. I think how the colours are used is a main factor, the colours are minimal and dark. Theres only like black, grey, white, red and green used, obviously there are variations on these colours used also.

Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer

This music video was made in 1986. It is a stop motion animation that shows image referances to the lyrics, for example in the first verse of the song it says
"You could have a steam train If you'd just lay down your tracks You could have an aeroplane flying If you bring your blue sky back"

The images shown in the video are timed to appear when those lyrics are being sang. As you can see in the images below there is a train, a plane and a blue sky.

This video is relevant to this topic because the theme is music, we have to create 2 story boards and 4 final images for our own music video, this is helpful because i was thinking of maybe doing a stop motion animation for my video.
I like the fact that this is a stop motion video because, well to be honest i didn't think people in the 1980's even knew what stop motion was so i was impressed. I was also impressed by the amount of effort that has been put into it and how the images throughout relate to the lyrics. There are alot of different materials used, i like how there is face paint used to make the video fit in more with the lyrics like on the last image above, they have used face paint there and the clouds move across his face like in real life.
If i were to create a video like this i wouldnt change it, it would be different and have better resorces but thats only because times have changed and so has technology so i think it would just have better materials to work with.

Andy Warhol - Marilyn Monroe

Andy Warhol was made famous for work as a painter, filmmaker, record producer and author. Art like this was known as pop art. His art was mass produced using a procedure called silk screening, silk screening is enlarging and transfering a photo on to silk, then a variety of colours are printed on to the screen with a rubber squeegee to create the block colours.
He used a lot of everyday objects for his art and a famous painting he did was of campbels tomato soup. He was known as "the pope of pop"
There is an Andy Worhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Andy Warhol Museum is one of the biggest museums featuring only one artist in the world. The museum features more than four thousand works of art by Warhol. His works of art include paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, films and videos. In addition to Warhol's artwork, visitors can find information on Andy Warhol's life.
